My Financial Calendar from Unbiased
Unbiased, the place some consumers go to find an IFA or financial adviser, have launched a new consumer tool: The Financial Calender. It is intended to help consumers think about the finance related things that occur on specific dates throughout the year, for example renewing one’s car insurance.

It’s a great little tool that can integrates with Outlook to add the key dates into your diary. It’s a slight shame it doesn’t integrate with anything other than Outlook as I personally use Google Calendar, but it’s a good start.

Implications and opportunities from Ofcom's Communication Market Report
Ofcom’s annual Communication market Report has recently been published and shows, despite the recession, consumer’s money and time investment in communication technology remains strong.
The recession is failing to dent our love of communications, with UK consumers spending more time than ever before watching TV, using their mobile phone and surfing the internet.

Platforms and Practice Technology 2009
This one-day conference to help advisers evaluate technology
slipped under the radar for me, but thanks to the power of Twitter, Tina Weeks, aka: TheFinanceCoach has been posting really useful insights and links throughout the day. Either checkout her Twitter stream or search for #dgc.
Some key findings so far:
- Google is looking to get into the price comparison market.
- Look to the US to see technology trends and successes that may work here in the UK.
- There are 13 Wrap platforms in the UK currently, most of which are owned by life companies.
- Perhaps true independent wraps or finance aggregation services should be where investment is placed, rather than life office-only wraps.
- Advisers must segment their client bank and differentiate accordingly to maximise profits. Perhaps consider internet-only for some customers.
- The UK is lagging behind in terms of innovation, which is a sad state of affairs. Either that or we’re rubbish at getting our messages out there.
I’m sure more value would have been derived for me if I had attended, but for me this is the next best thing and shows the power of Twitter.

Social Media in Financial Services
Would have loved to have gone to the Social Media in Financial Services conference, but sadly couldn’t make it. However as if to support the message of using social media in the industry the internet is awash with comment and write-ups on the event.
Of course the ubiquitous Twitter comes into it’s own via the use of the #socialmediafs hashtag from people at and around the conference itself, proving that word of mouth and technology can work together.
Blogging after the event has also happened with:
So overall it seems to have been a success and it’s good to see these kind of topics being discussed and dragging what is sometimes a very dry and backwards facing industry, albeit belatedly, into the modern world.
